This recipe provides instructions for making creamy, fluffy vanilla buttercream frosting that holds its shape well for decorating cakes and cupcakes.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened to room temperature
  • 4 cups powdered sugar, sifted
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • 3-4 tablespoons heavy cream or milk
  • Pinch of salt

Instructions

  1. Place the softened butter in a large bowl. Beat the butter with an electric mixer on medium speed until it is light and creamy, about 2 minutes.
  2. Gradually add the sifted powdered sugar, one cup at a time, mixing on low speed until just combined after each addition.
  3. Add the vanilla extract and the pinch of salt. Increase the mixer speed to medium-high and beat for 3 minutes until the mixture is fluffy.
  4. Add the heavy cream or milk, one tablespoon at a time, beating well after each addition until you reach your desired consistency. If you want a stiffer frosting for piping, use less liquid.
  5. Beat the frosting on medium-high speed for an additional 2-3 minutes to incorporate air, making it smooth and light.

Notes

  • For the best texture, ensure your butter is truly softened but not melted.
  • Sift the powdered sugar to prevent lumps in your finished frosting.
  • If the frosting is too thick, add more cream, half a teaspoon at a time. If it is too thin, add more sifted powdered sugar, one quarter cup at a time.
  • You can substitute milk with heavy cream for a richer flavor and slightly firmer texture.
