Make soft, buttery sugar cookies decorated with festive Christmas sprinkles. This recipe is easy to follow and great for holiday baking with kids.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 3 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup Christmas sprinkles (red, green, or mixed)
  • Extra sprinkles for topping

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Line baking sheets with parchment paper.
  2. In a large bowl, cream together the softened butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy.
  3. Beat in the eggs one at a time, then mix in the vanilla extract.
  4. In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt.
  5. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing until just combined. Do not overmix.
  6. Gently fold in the 1/2 cup of Christmas sprinkles.
  7. Drop rounded tablespoons of dough onto the prepared baking sheets, leaving about 2 inches between cookies.
  8. Gently flatten each dough ball slightly with the bottom of a glass or your palm.
  9. Sprinkle extra festive sprinkles over the top of each cookie dough ball.
  10. Bake for 9 to 11 minutes, or until the edges are lightly golden but the centers remain soft.
  11. Let the cookies cool on the baking sheet for 5 minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely.

Notes

  • For softer cookies, slightly underbake them by about one minute.
  • If you prefer a firmer cookie, chill the dough for 30 minutes before scooping.
  • You can use this dough to cut out shapes if you chill it thoroughly for at least 2 hours before rolling.
