Make this simple, hearty casserole featuring cheese-stuffed ravioli baked in a rich, creamy tomato sauce.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 (25 ounce) package refrigerated or frozen cheese ravioli
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 small onion, chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 (28 ounce) can crushed tomatoes
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 1/2 cup chicken or vegetable broth
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried basil
  • Salt and black pepper to taste
  • 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1/4 cup fresh parsley, chopped (for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit. Lightly grease a 9×13 inch baking dish.
  2. If using frozen ravioli, allow them to thaw slightly. If using refrigerated, proceed directly.
  3. Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and cook until soft, about 5 minutes.
  4. Add the minced garlic and cook for 1 minute until fragrant.
  5. Pour in the crushed tomatoes, heavy cream, and broth. Stir well to combine.
  6. Stir in the oregano, basil, salt, and pepper. Bring the sauce to a gentle simmer.
  7. Remove the sauce from the heat. Gently fold the ravioli into the sauce mixture until they are coated.
  8. Pour the ravioli and sauce mixture into the prepared baking dish, spreading it into an even layer.
  9. Sprinkle the mozzarella cheese evenly over the top of the ravioli. Scatter the Parmesan cheese over the mozzarella.
  10. Bake for 20 to 25 minutes, or until the sauce is bubbly and the cheese topping is melted and lightly golden brown.
  11. Let the casserole rest for 5 minutes before serving. Garnish with fresh parsley.

Notes

  • For a meat version, brown 1/2 pound of ground Italian sausage or beef before adding the onions, then drain excess fat.
  • You can substitute half-and-half for heavy cream, but the sauce will be slightly thinner.
  • To make this dish vegetarian, use vegetable broth instead of chicken broth.
